THE CARPENTER
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire and told his contractor-employer of his plan to leave the house-building business to live a more leisurely life with his family. The carpenter would surely miss the paycheck but they could get by. He really needed to retire. The contractor was sorry to see his dutiful worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as personal favor. The carpenter said yes and done so but it is apparent that his heart was not in his work. He carried out a lousy workmanship and even used inferior materials. It was not a gracious way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house”, he said “My gift for you.” The carpenter was surprised! What a shame, if only he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.
Thus it all depend on us. We build our lives a day at a time, often using less of our best efforts. Suddenly we realize that we have to live the life we have faintly built. If we could live our life all over again, we would do it much differently. However, we cannot go back.
You are the carpenter of your own life and each day you hammer a nail or erect a wall of life. Someone said, life is a “do-it-yourself project”. The attitude and the choices you make today will build the “house” you will dwell in tomorrow. Build it wisely.
